The poor in spirit are those who recognize that they have very little or nothing at all within themselves that can be counted as valuable. This requires a humble and often a broken heart because when our hearts do not know brokenness the heart will not realize the need for love, mercy, kindness, grace and fellowship. So instead of seeking these greater things we seek after lesser things like fame, wealth, pleasure or power which cannot service our needs for love and friendship but only hide them under a mountain of the lesser riches.
A particular video by Britney Spears called "Lucky" really brings this all out and helps us see how well we can hide our pain, sorrows and troubles under things like money, acquaintances, professional success, all kinds of addictions, or entertainment. We also see the angel who looked down upon this beautiful actress with sorrow in her heart because she knew how sad and lonely this actress named Lucky truly felt. And that is the reason no-one else could see the pain this one girl felt, because to open yourself to such a reality opens you to the possibility of being hurt and no-one else was willing to take that chance.
